Hi8 (High Band 8mm) was introduced by Sony in 1989 as an upgrade to the original Video8 format. Using the same compact 8mm cassette form factor (3.7" × 2.4" × 0.6"), Hi8 delivers roughly 400 lines of horizontal resolution — nearly double the 240 lines of Video8 and comparable to S-VHS quality.

Hi8 camcorders were extremely popular throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, favored for their compact size and superior picture quality. Tapes typically hold 60 minutes in SP mode or 120 minutes in LP mode. If your small camcorder tapes have 'Hi8' printed on the cassette or packaging, you have this format. We also digitize standard Video8 tapes with the same equipment.
