    Standard 8mm (also called Regular 8 or Double 8) was introduced by Kodak in 1932 as a lower-cost alternative to 16mm for home moviemakers. The film is actually 16mm-wide stock that was exposed on half the width, rewound, then exposed on the other half — producing a frame that is 7.5mm across after splitting and splicing.

    If your reels are small (3–5 inch diameter) and the sprocket holes appear on both sides of the strip, you almost certainly have standard 8mm. Common reel sizes are 50ft, 100ft, and 200ft.     How do I know if my film is standard 8mm vs. Super 8?

    The easiest way is to look at the sprocket holes. Standard 8mm has larger sprocket holes on both edges of the film, while Super 8 has smaller sprocket holes on only one edge. If you're still unsure, take a close-up photo of the strip and email it to us — we'll identify it for free before your 8mm film to digital conversion begins.

    My 8mm reels have no reel case. Can you still digitize them?

    Yes. Loose reels are fine. We recommend placing each reel in a zip-lock bag for shipping to protect it during transit, but our 8mm film transfer service can handle bare reels without any problem.

    How long does a 50ft reel play for?

    At the standard 18fps filming speed, a 50ft reel of 8mm film runs approximately 4 minutes. At 24fps (occasionally used for sound film), the same reel runs about 3 minutes. We'll digitize at the correct frame rate to preserve natural motion.

    Can you repair my 8mm film before digitizing?
