What Makes 16mm Film Special?
16mm was originally introduced by Kodak in 1923 as a less expensive alternative to 35mm for amateur use, but its quality quickly made it the format of choice for newsreels, documentaries, educational films, and independent cinema. Running at 16 frames per second for silent footage or 24fps for sound, 16mm delivers a richness and grain character that smaller formats simply can't match.
16mm reels are larger than 8mm or Super 8 — typically 100ft to 1200ft — and the film is approximately ⅝ inch (16mm) wide with sprocket holes on one or both edges. If you have reels in metal or plastic cans that look like they could be from a projection booth or film school, they are almost certainly 16mm. Capture can convert 16mm movies to digital from a range of reel sizes, including larger reels commonly used for this format.

I inherited 30 cans of 16mm film from my late father who was a documentary filmmaker. Capture digitized every reel beautifully — the optical audio track was even captured and synced. Truly professional work.
Sent in 16mm educational films from the 1960s. Some reels were warped but Capture's team handled them and got excellent results. The files are sharp and the colours are vivid. Couldn't be happier.
Our church had 16mm reels of community events going back to the 1940s. The digitization quality exceeded our expectations. A few reels had shrinkage but Capture communicated clearly before proceeding.
Capture handled 16mm reels that other services refused to touch due to their age. Every frame that could be saved was saved. The barcoded tracking gave me peace of mind throughout the whole process.

Frequently Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about our 16mm film to digital conversion service.
How long does a 100ft reel of 16mm play for?
At 24fps (the standard for sound film), a 100ft reel runs approximately 2 minutes 45 seconds. At 16fps (common for silent 16mm), the same reel runs about 4 minutes. We'll confirm the correct frame rate before digitizing to ensure natural playback.
Do you handle optical sound tracks on 16mm?
Yes. Many 16mm prints carry an optical sound track (a thin strip along one edge of the film). We can capture and decode the optical audio and sync it with the picture. Please note whether your reels have a visible audio stripe when placing your order.
Can you digitize 16mm reels that are warped or shrunken?
In many cases, yes. Moderate warping and shrinkage are manageable on our professional equipment. Severely shrunken or brittle reels may require restoration pre-treatment; our technicians will assess each reel on arrival and contact you if any issues arise before converting your 16mm film to digital.
My 16mm reels are in large metal cans. Is that okay?
Absolutely. Metal film cans are the ideal storage container for 16mm film. Ship them as-is — just make sure the lid is secure, and the cans are well-padded in an outer box before sending in your 16mm film conversion order.
What is the maximum reel size you accept?
We accept reels up to 1,200ft (the standard feature-length reel size). If you have longer reels or multiple reels from a single film, contact us before shipping, and we'll advise on the best approach for your 16mm film digitization project.
What is the difference between 16mm, 8mm, and Super 8 film?
16mm film is twice the size of Super 8 and 8mm, which is one reason it was commonly used in Hollywood filmmaking. The larger film can show more details and a sharper image, making the quality significantly better than 8mm film types. Both Super 8mm and 8mm films are the same size, but Super 8 was a high-definition version that also had audio capability.
How do I digitize 16mm film?
Send your 16mm reels to Capture or use an available drop-off location. The film is inspected, cleaned, repaired where needed, scanned frame by frame, and converted into downloadable digital video files.
Can Capture transfer 16mm film to digital with sound?
Yes, supported optical or magnetic soundtracks can be captured when present and in usable condition. The technicians inspect each reel to determine whether audio can be transferred.
Can you convert 16mm movies to digital if the reels are damaged?
Many older 16mm reels can still be processed. Capture includes basic repairs where possible and evaluates the film before scanning to determine whether it can safely pass through the equipment.
What is included with a 16mm film transfer service?
The current service includes in-house processing, film cleaning, basic repairs, frame-by-frame scanning, digital video files, 90 days of cloud access, and return of the original reels.

Acetate-based home movie film suffers 'vinegar syndrome': once decay starts it accelerates and the film shrinks and becomes brittle. — National Film Preservation Foundation
“The symptoms of vinegar syndrome are a pungent vinegar smell, followed eventually by shrinkage, embrittlement, and buckling of the gelatin emulsion. … Once it begins in earnest, the remaining life of the film is short because the process speeds up as it goes along.”
