16mm was originally introduced by Kodak in 1923 as a less expensive alternative to 35mm for amateur use, but its quality quickly made it the format of choice for newsreels, documentaries, educational films, and independent cinema. Running at 16 frames per second for silent footage or 24fps for sound, 16mm delivers a richness and grain character that smaller formats simply can't match.
16mm reels are larger than 8mm or Super 8 — typically 100ft to 1200ft — and the film is approximately ⅝ inch (16mm) wide with sprocket holes on one or both edges. If you have reels in metal or plastic cans that look like they could be from a projection booth or film school, they are almost certainly 16mm.
